Our farm-based Resilience Project Groups are called “Otters.”
Who is Eligible?
Kids between ages 9-13 who:
Have experienced a traumatic event such as an accident, illness, loss of loved one, loss of home, or witnessing violence; or
Are living with ongoing trauma such as poverty, homelessness, abuse, neglect, living with domestic violence in the home, has an incarcerated or absent parent, or is in foster care.
What is the Program?
Otter groups are led by highly-trained facilitators, called “Otter Kin,” who serve as mentors. Otter groups can hold up to 10 participants. Otters meet at Nature Nurtures Farm for 14, 2-hour sessions. During the first hour of each session, Otter groups form a supportive circle to build skills in emotional awareness, communication and conflict resolution, self-care and healthy coping, games, and nonverbal expression such as music, art, and movement. In the second hour, a Nature Nurtures Farm educator partners with the Otter Kin facilitator to extend themes from hour 1 into care and interactions with the farm animals and stewardship of the land.
